Part of "The Chronicles of the Black Company" series
Glen Cook's "Water Sleeps" is the penultimate book in the author's renowned series, The Black Company. As with the previous books in the series, "Water Sleeps" offers a unique blend of fantasy and military fiction, with a focus on the lives and struggles of a band of mercenaries known as the Black Company. In "Water Sleeps," the Company is in disarray, having been all but destroyed in the previous book. The few remaining members are scattered and in hiding, with the exception of Croaker, the Company's annalist and main protagonist, who has been left in a state of near-catatonia after the traumatic events of the previous book. The story picks up with the re-emergence of the Dominator, the evil sorcerer who was thought to have been destroyed centuries earlier. The Dominator has returned, and with him comes a new wave of terror and destruction. The Black Company, what's left of it, must regroup and find a way to stop the Dominator once and for all. Cook's writing is as sharp and gritty as ever in "Water Sleeps." The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the plot is fast-paced and engaging. The author's military background is evident in the detailed and realistic descriptions of battles and military strategy. One of the standout features of "Water Sleeps" is the exploration of the theme of memory and the power it holds. Croaker's catatonic state is a result of the trauma he has experienced, and his memories are slowly returning to him as the story progresses. This serves as a metaphor for the Company's own struggles, as they must come to terms with their past in order to face their future. Overall, "Water Sleeps" is a thrilling and satisfying addition to The Black Company series. Fans of the series will not be disappointed, and newcomers will find it to be an excellent introduction to Cook's unique and captivating world...
