In "Dark Places," the second book in the Claire Morgan series by Linda Ladd, the protagonist is once again faced with the task of solving a gruesome and baffling murder. This time, the victim is a young woman found dead in a remote area of the Ozarks, and the only clue to her identity is a torn piece of clothing. Claire, a forensic investigator, is called to the scene and quickly becomes obsessed with solving the case. She is haunted by the victim's fate and is determined to bring her killer to justice. As she delves deeper into the investigation, she discovers that the victim had been leading a double life, and that there are many people who had motive to want her dead. The story is set in the small town of Willow Springs, Missouri, and Ladd does an excellent job of creating a sense of place. The town and its inhabitants are vividly brought to life, and the reader feels as if they are right there alongside Claire as she navigates the twists and turns of the case. Ladd also does an excellent job of developing Claire's character throughout the novel. She is a complex and multi-dimensional character, who is both tough and vulnerable. She is also a recovering alcoholic, which adds an extra layer of depth to her character. The pacing of the novel is excellent, and the reader is kept on the edge of their seat as the story unfolds. The plot is full of surprises, and just when you think you have it all figured out, Ladd throws in a twist that will leave you reeling. Overall, "Dark Places" is a gripping and suspenseful novel that will keep you hooked until the very end. It is a must-read for fans of crime fiction and anyone who enjoys a well-crafted and thrilling story...
